ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Water Conservation

Smart irrigation practices begin with implementing weather-based control systems, low-flow irrigation devices, and the use of reclaimed and well water. MAA is already using these practices in many of our communities. We also use drought-tolerant plant material in our landscaping that requires less water. Our highest irrigation use properties undergo annual efficiency audits, and since 2012 we have saved nearly 100 million gallons as a result of our conservation efforts.

Green Partnerships

We have established partnerships to strengthen our commitment to environmentally conscious practices. To date, we have partnered to recycle discarded carpeting that would otherwise end up in the landfill, and we have progressively updated our properties to use the most energy efficient lighting and appliances, helping the environment and saving our residents money at the same time.

Energy Efficient Appliances

Many MAA communities offer appliance packages with the Energy Star rating, conserving energy while helping our residents save money. We’ve also installed reduced watt, high performance lighting fixtures in common areas.

Reducing Waste

Our commitment continues, and as new practices evolve, so will we. Online portals allow our residents to pay rent and handle routine transactions electronically, eliminating paper waste. Many of our communities also offer on-site recycling to encourage environmental responsibility.

Many of our communities have on site recycling. Please refer to the community page that you’re interested in for a full list of amenities or contact the community directly for more information.
MAA is dedicated to the more efficient use of our natural resources. We employ smart irrigation practices in many at most of our communities. These include implementing weather-based control systems, low-flow irrigation devices and the use of reclaimed and well water. We also use drought-tolerant plant material in our landscaping that requires less water and incorporate hardscaping to reduce turf area. Our highest irrigation use properties undergo annual efficiency audits. Since 2012, we have saved almost 100 million gallons in our landscaping program as a result of our conservation efforts. Many of our communities install low-flow plumbing fixtures in our kitchens and baths and we monitor community water use throughout the year to spot opportunities for improvement.
MAA has established partnerships to recycle discarded carpeting as we update properties. We continue to look for opportunities to expand our efforts in this area including donating used appliances and model furniture to our corporate charity The Open Arms Foundation. In 2019, the sale from these donations topped $35,000 will all proceeds benefitting the Open Arms program.
